THOMAS SILL, C.A.
1905 – 1986
Mr. Sill lived his entire life in Winnipeg and practiced as a chartered accountant for many years. He was an astute investor who built a fortune which became the basis for the Thomas Sill Foundation.
In his last will, Tom Sill established the foundation which bears his name. His will, a measure of his astuteness, contained only this instruction:
“I have decided to create an entity for charitable purposes.”
Update – March 2024
The Thomas Sill Foundation wound down its operations at the end of 2023.
One of the Thomas Sill Foundation’s priorities was to help communities across Manitoba grow and prosper. As it wrapped up its operations, it worked with community foundations in Selkirk, Brandon, Morden, Winkler, Altona, and Winnipeg to ensure communities outside of Winnipeg would continue to be supported.
Decades ago, Thomas Sill’s accounting firm had practices in Brandon, Selkirk, Morden, Winkler, and Altona. To commemorate his involvement in these communities, the Foundation established Thomas Sill Funds, permanent endowment funds, at each of those community’s local community foundations. The funds will support local programs and projects, and help these communities prosper, now and forever.
Resources from The Thomas Sill Foundation created two additional endowment funds at The Winnipeg Foundation to support Manitoba community foundations that are members of the Endow Manitoba program. The Thomas Sill Manitoba Fund will boost the grant making capacity of our province’s community foundations to support programs and projects in communities outside of Winnipeg. The Thomas Sill Development Fund will support the Endow Manitoba program’s ongoing efforts to build the capacity of Manitoba’s community foundations, ensuring they continue to grow and thrive for generations to come.
These new funds permanently honour Thomas Sill’s legacy of supporting our community.
